Tanghalang Pilipino stages Tinio version of ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’

GMA News

While the play has a lot of funny and light moments as well as a happy ending, Siguion-Reyna says he does not see “Pangarap” as a whimsical story. “There are lots of dark elements in this play. We went for thematic manifestations and the suggestion of fascism and passion instead of constricting the play to a certain period,” he said. “In fact, I even thought about setting it in a mental hospital, a 19th century Spanish precolonial period, traditional Philippine mythology, or a totalitarian state—but that [would have been] reducing the play.”

Shakespeare for the millennials and otherwise

Indeed, Shakespeare is complicated enough as it is for today’s millennial audiences but director Siguion Reyna dissected the piece, turned it inside and out and made it fun and enjoyable for today’s audiences without losing the play’s essence. It was as much a good occasion as any to re-experience Shakespeare. Midway into the play, the more you discover that Tinio is the consummate genius for allowing us to enjoy it thoroughly in our native tongue.

Behind the diverse feelings of the characters, humor and excitement still find a special place in the corners of storyline. The value of truth is being exhibited in the times where everyone is confused, as well as the importance of accepting the people between our predicaments. Moreover, this classical adaptation focuses on the consequences of desires that can ruin someone’s existence in the long run—if we fail to mend the troubles we make.

Magic and mayhem in ‘Midsummer’

It is to the cast’s credit that they make this particular linguistic divide sound natural. The senior performers who play the Greek aristocrats (De Guzman, Richard Cunanan) infuse their lines with the necessary gravitas sans pomposity, and yet can easily pull back to deliver the required comic punch. Audie Gemora and Liesl Batucan, meanwhile, stick to Filipino as the fairy rulers Oberon and Titania.

Tanghalang Pilipino reimagines Shakespeare’s Misummer Night’s Dream

He talks about the cast: “I went into rehearsals as if the two great playwrights, Shakespeare and Tinio, were in the room with me. I had so much fun exploring this play with the cast and I’m enjoying the fact that I can’t fully grasp the entirety of the play. We’re finding it out together. Here, we are exploring the roles of men and women, and sexual and gender politics, among others. I’m working with a great cast.”

‘Midsummer Night’ in Tagalog is fun, fanciful

Fred Hawson | ABS-CBN News

That rollicking fun performance of “Pyramus and Thisbe” in the last act looked so natural as a disastrously amateur effort — hilariously amazing! The show may be long (over two-and-a-half hours with a 10 minute intermission) and the language poetic (yet so refreshingly current), but overall it was mischievous fun, engaging and very entertaining — another triumphant production by Tanghalang Pilipino! The happy and appreciative full house last night was proof of that.
