Eto, Brute?

Isang devise-devise-an ng mga feeling-feelingang artist na pa-relevant sa panahon ng Dutertismo inspired ng “Julius Caesar” ni William Shakespeare.

Review

[T]here was the devised performance at the Ateneo’s Arete Lobby of the play (was it a play?) Eto Brute, put on by a group of young performers (Delphine Buencamino, Jenny Jamora, Guelan Luarca, Charles Yee, Xander Soriano), collectively already a roll-call of some of the brightest young names in local theater. So this is what “devised” means! Almost impossible to adequately describe, it was like a stream-of-consciousness mix-up of the political & the personal, sometimes audaciously imaginative, sometimes maddeningly baffling. Ostensibly taking off from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar assasination scene, violently enacted, it segues to personal ruminations, taped interviews of pro-DDS voices, even elicited audience views of the national situation. Whatever else one’s reactions, it was provocative & through it all ran the passionate concern & commitment of the performers, what Rofel Brion called “young actors on fire!”. Clearly a “work in progress”, it should be fascinating to see how it evolves (perhaps w more focus?).

Largely out of sight of the mainstream, what a battery of creativity & commitment! (Arthur Hilardo)
